NOLA Darling: Segment 1- New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp
New Orleans is a great city known to have some of the best historical culture, jazz music, and cuisine in the world.
Recently I had an opportunity to visit the Crescent City to explore these things while having a croissant in addition to a multitude of Cajun and Creole dishes popular among the locals as well as tourists in the know.
During my previous visit to NOLA several restaurants were recommended to me from people whose opinion I truly respect. On that list was Mr. B's Bistro in the French Quarter to try the New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp. Absolutely AMAZING! and definitely one of the best dish I've ever had in New Orleans. During this visit Mr. B's would be my first dining stop, but this time it would not leave as undisputed champ as best meal of the trip. They're still the champ in the New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp class, but there is new contender for favorite dish. Contending for this title would be chargrilled oysters. We plan to elaborate on this in another segment.
Since New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp is prepared differently by different restaurants I needed to compare and contrast using another establishment to determine if Mr. B's is really the best or if there is something better. To complete my research I headed to Pacal's Manale, the OG for New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp.
Pascal's was good but is not fooling with Mr. B's. You could taste all of the traditional ingredients of worcestshire sauce, black pepper, and butter while the shrimp flavor was more prevalent in their gravy/broth. The flavor of Mr. B's dish was more buttery, tangy, overall more abundantly flavored while the gravy/broth was slightly thicker. It definitely had a more identifiable signature flavor while Pascal's Manale was still good, but more like a broth with less of a flavor punch and was bit more subtle. Below is footage of this most decadent dish from both establishments.
